Ebook About “Robin Hobb is one of our very best fantasy writers.”New York Times bestselling author Kevin J. AndersonWith Dragon Keeper, Robin Hobb, critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling “master fantasist” (Baltimore Sun), begins a breathtaking new series about the resurgence of dragons in a world that both needs and fears them—the world Hobb’s readers most recently visited in her immensely popular “Tawny Man” trilogy. Volume One of the Rain Wilds Chronicles, Dragon Keeper is yet another magnificent adventure from the author of The Soldier Son and Farseer Trilogies, confirming the Contra Costa Times of California’s assessment of Hobb as “one of the most important writers in 21st century fantasy.”Book Dragon Keeper (Rain Wilds Chronicles, Vol. 1): Volume One of the Rain Wilds Chronicles Review :
I am only 1/3 of the way through, and don’t know that I can continue. This is a dark story with so far, no relief. There seems to be a pattern of rape in her books, and now we are including marital rape. Although her book is also inconsistent, because the main character’s husband basically raped her, then it just said he had never forced her???? This is where I quit reading. This character is just dense, or is it just naive? And her friend? That’s a friend? He suggested her to her husband as a spouse. Then says she deserves better, while he is the one sleeping with her husband? And the poor dragons. If you like dragons, I’m not sure this is the book for you either. This book is maybe characterized by the sub plot of the pigeons. They do not appear to have anything to do with the story. The letters are just annoying. This was clearly set-up, although very interesting set-up. I heard in an interview that the first and second books were written as one book that grew too long and was split into two. So this explains how the first book was mainly introducing the characters and getting them in place for their journey. This focuses on new characters who haven't appeared in Hobb's other books. Alise is a woman from Bingtown who loves studying dragons and Elderlings. She is in a loveless marriage of convenience, and when she gets the chance to travel upriver to the Rain Wilds to study the dragons there, she puts her all into it, pretty much thinking about it as the last pleasurable thing she has left in her life. Sedric is her husband's assistant, and unbeknownst to her, his lover. Her husband happens to be displeased with Sedric at the time, and as a punishment, sends him to accompany Alise on her journey. There's also Thymara, a heavily marked Rainwilder who was born with claws and other dragonlike features, who hires herself as a dragon keeper in order to make some kind of life for herself away from her parent's home. There are a few other POV characters, one of them a dragon. This is well-written, character-focused and slow-moving, much like Hobb's other books. I am very much invested in Alise and Sedric, both trying to make the most of a bad situation, and Sedric especially in true Hobb form making some very bad decisions. I can't wait to continue with this series. I already have the second book on my Kindle.
